How thick does a concrete slab have to be?
The concrete floor slab thickness for residential construction is 4 inches. However, if a heavy load will be placed on the surface from time to time, such as motorhomes or garbage trucks, then it’s recommended that you use 5-6 inches of concrete to properly support and protect the slab.
Do I need gravel under my concrete slab?
Concrete is a porous material, which means it will absorb any moisture in contact with it. This can lead to pooling water and erosion of your slab if you do not have crushed stone beneath the concrete for drainage purposes. Adding some crushed stones will allow proper drainage and protect from ground-level contaminants seeping in through cracks or gaps in the sealant membrane around your foundation walls.
Concrete absorbs all liquids nearby due to its porosity, leading to pools of stagnant water on slabs without adequate drain quality underneath like a layer of broken rocks (crushed stone).
Should you put plastic under concrete?
A concrete vapor barrier is a material that prevents moisture from entering the floor. A fresh cement slab needs to dry and stay dry for it not to have any problems with cracking or other construction issues, so installing a vapor barrier under your new building will help ensure you don’t run into these common challenges.
